For ages we've been told that a lighter helmet is a better helmet. Manufacturers overcome competition by creating something lighter. Lighter helmets, lighter materials require larger helmets to meet the minimum DOT requirements. Those who understand physics will understand that a larger helmet creates a larger fulcrum, greater advantage in creating spine damage and damage to the brain. A larger helmet means larger surface area to impact objects in the area of the crash resulting in rotational forces to the neck and brain.
Use the same passion to select a new helmet that you would for a good pair of riding boots or leathers. Your body is useless without a healthy nerve center to control it. Use your head! Educate yourself. Wearing a helmet SHOULD NOT be about meeting a requirement. Accidents result in multiple impacts. Most foam based helmets are not designed to withstand that.
