Adventures in Motorcycling with Andy Abney

As a student in the school of hard knocks, I've likely experienced every motorcycling mistake you could make. From the moment I first threw a leg over the seat of a motorcycle, I was thrust into a world filled with exhilarating highs and daunting lows. In discussing my adventures and errors, I'll share how I confronted certain challenges and managed to overcome them, transforming each misstep into a valuable lesson that contributed to my growth as a rider. Hopefully my mistakes will teach you how to survive.

My adventures in motorcycling started at the age of fifteen. I was not taught how to ride a motorcycle; I was taught how to race one. I was probably a little over 100 pounds and the first motorcycle I ever rode was a 1975 Kawasaki 900, not exactly a beginner motorcycle. My father was a great guy, but he lacked parenting responsibility. If there was a mistake to make, I probably made it. I'm just glad I survived and can now share my journey with you.

My journey began with the common yet perilous mistake of underestimating the importance of proper gear. On my very first ride, I opted for casual clothing, thinking that a short trip around the neighborhood wouldn't require much protection. However, a sudden slip on a gravel patch taught me the hard way about the necessity of wearing a helmet, gloves, and protective clothing. This experience became a pivotal moment in my motorcycling education, leading me to later invest in quality gear that not only enhanced my safety but also boosted my confidence on the road.

Another significant challenge I faced was learning to navigate the intricacies of motorcycle handling. Early on, I struggled with cornering techniques, often leaning too far into turns or misjudging my speed. These mistakes resulted in a few close calls that could have ended badly. To overcome this, I dedicated time to practice in controlled environments, such as empty parking lots, where I could focus on mastering my balance and throttle control. Additionally, I sought guidance from experienced riders which provided me with invaluable insights into the physics of riding and the importance of body positioning. With persistence and practice, I gradually became more adept at handling my motorcycle, turning what once felt intimidating into a source of joy and freedom.

Furthermore, I encountered the challenge of maintaining composure in adverse weather conditions. During one particularly rainy ride, I found myself struggling to maintain traction and visibility. This experience highlighted the critical need for adaptability and awareness while riding. To address this, I researched techniques for riding in rain and inclement weather, learning how to adjust my speed, increase my following distance, and utilize my brakes more effectively. By embracing the lessons learned from that harrowing ride, I became a more versatile rider, capable of tackling diverse conditions with confidence.

Lastly, my journey has not been without its share of mechanical mishaps. Early on, I had an accident due to neglecting routine maintenance. This incident was a wake-up call that underscored the importance of staying proactive in motorcycle upkeep. Since then, I've taken it upon myself to learn the basics of motorcycle maintenance, from checking tire pressure to performing oil changes. This newfound knowledge not only saved me from future accidents but also deepened my appreciation for the machine I ride.

Through each of these experiences, I have come to realize that the path of a motorcyclist is paved with lessons learned through trial and error. Each mistake has contributed to my overall development, shaping me into a more skilled and responsible rider. As I continue to navigate the open road, I carry with me the wisdom gained from my adventures, ready to face new challenges with resilience and a commitment to continuous improvement.
