Of course, the answer is no, and this principle certainly applies to motorists as well. The unpredictability of human behavior behind the wheel can lead to situations that are not only confusing but potentially dangerous.

Recently, I found myself behind a vehicle when the driver activated their turn signal, clearly indicating their intention to make a left-hand turn. They even took the extra step of slowing down and shifting slightly to the left side of their lane, which further reinforced my belief that they were committed to executing that turn. As I cautiously proceeded to maneuver my vehicle to their right in order to pass while maintaining my course straight ahead, I was taken by surprise when, out of nowhere, the driver abruptly decided against their original plan. They continued straight, almost sideswiping my vehicle in the process. This unexpected turn of events left me wondering: what went wrong in this scenario?

Now, it’s important to clarify that this incident did not happen to me personally because I maintain a healthy skepticism towards turn signals and other driving cues, but it certainly could have happened to someone else. Let’s take a moment to analyze what might have transpired in this situation. The driver, initially set on making a left turn, may have suddenly recalled an important detail or obligation that required them to continue straight instead. In their haste to change their mind, they likely believed that their decision was made so quickly that no one could possibly have anticipated their move to pass them on the right side at that moment. Unfortunately, by the time they reconsidered their choice, I found myself in their blind spot, and even if they had glanced over their shoulder, they might have missed seeing me altogether.

Always wait until the vehicle has completed its turn and is no longer posing a potential danger to you before attempting to pass. Never assume that a driver will follow through with their intended action just because they have signaled; intentions can change in an instant, and the consequences can be severe.
