Mounting and dismounting a motorcycle might seem straightforward, but the way you approach these actions can greatly affect your safety and balance. In this post, I share my personal technique of mounting from the right side and dismounting to the left side, explaining why this method works well and how it can help you stay steady and avoid accidents.

Why Mounting and Dismounting Matter

Many riders overlook the importance of how they get on and off their motorcycles. Improper mounting or dismounting can lead to loss of balance, falls, or even damage to the bike. This is especially true for heavier motorcycles or when riding on uneven surfaces.

By developing a consistent and safe routine, you reduce the risk of injury and protect your bike. The technique I use involves mounting from the right side and dismounting to the left side. This approach is not random; it’s based on the design of most motorcycles and practical safety considerations.

Mounting from the Right Side

Most motorcycles have their kickstand on the left side. When you mount from the right, you avoid stepping over the kickstand, which can be awkward and risky. Here’s how I do it:

  • Approach the bike from the right side.

  • Hold the handlebars firmly.

  • Swing your left leg over the seat, moving from right to left.

  • Sit down gently, keeping your feet on the ground until you’re ready to start.

This method keeps your movements smooth and controlled. It also prevents you from accidentally losing balance or knocking your motorcycle off the kickstand while swinging your leg over.

Benefits of Mounting from the Right

  • Avoids interference with the kickstand.

  • Provides better control over the bike’s balance.

  • Reduces the chance of tripping or slipping.

  • Allows you to use the right foot to stabilize if needed.

Dismounting to the Left Side

When it’s time to get off, I always dismount to the left side. This is the side where the kickstand is located, so it’s easier to put the bike on the stand without awkward movements. Here’s the step-by-step:

  • Bring the bike to a complete stop.

  • Keep both feet on the ground.

  • Swing your right leg back over the seat to the left side.

  • Step down on the left side, close to the kickstand.

Dismounting to the left side helps you maintain control and prevents the bike from tipping over. It also makes parking and securing the motorcycle more efficient.

Practical Tips for Smooth Mounting and Dismounting

To make these techniques work well, keep these tips in mind:

  • Wear proper footwear with good grip to avoid slipping.

  • Practice on flat ground before trying on slopes or uneven surfaces.

  • Keep your movements deliberate and steady; rushing increases risk.

  • Use the handlebars for support when swinging your leg over or off.

  • Check your surroundings to avoid hazards like traffic or obstacles.

Adjusting for Different Motorcycle Types

While the right-side mount and left-side dismount work well for most standard motorcycles, some bikes may require adjustments:

  • Scooters and step-through bikes: These often allow mounting from either side easily.

  • Sport bikes: The same technique applies but be mindful of the seat height and footpeg position.

  • Heavy cruisers or touring bikes: Take extra care with balance and use the handlebars firmly.

Always adapt your technique to your specific motorcycle and comfort level.

Mastering how you get on and off your motorcycle is a simple but powerful way to improve your riding safety. Mounting from the right side and dismounting to the left side aligns with the bike’s design and helps maintain balance.
